On March 23, 2010, over four hundred guests
filled the Ballroom of the Doubletree Hotel in downtown Houston for
FotoFest's 2010 International Fine Print Auction. Thirty-eight sponsor
tables were filled with collectors, patrons, guests and artists from
Europe, Asia, Latin America, Canada and the United States..
Bidding was very strong and all eighty-one prints, donated by important contemporary artists from 17 countries, were sold. Eikoh Hosoe, Alfredo Jaar, Yao Lu, Liliana Porter, Xing Danwen, David Maisel, Susan Derges and Bohnchang Koo were a
few of the distinguished artists featured in the 2010 Fine Print
Auction. Archival framing was done by Justin Matthias, Artists' Framing Resource, Houston, Texas. All prints were framed with fine Italian wood
molding donated by ROMA Moulding.
The FotoFest 2010 Benefit Auction earned close to $400,000. For the
ninth year, Denise Bethel, Director of the Photographs Department, Sotheby’s, New York,
led the Auction. Ms. Bethel, who donated her services, gave a much
applauded presentation on collecting fine art photography to sponsors
and collectors on the evening before the Live Auction.
The 2010
Auction chairs, Austin James and Blakely Bering, were an integral part in
the Auction’s success along with the corporate sponsorship from the Doubletree
Hotel, ROMA Moulding, individual
sponsors, volunteers and the FotoFest Board of Directors.
Revenues
from the print sales and major sponsorships support FotoFest's Biennial and
year-round art programs. Ticket sales and individual sponsorships support
both FotoFest's art programs and its school-based Literacy Through Photography education program.
The Auction is one of the main events of the FotoFest 2010 Biennial and provided
a rare opportunity to encounter high quality contemporary fine art photography
from Latin America, Asia, Europe, North America and Australia.
Every two years FotoFest organizes one
of
the finest charitable auctions of its kind I
have seen.
